KERNERSVILLE-Maria Fornasier Smith, 59, died of breast cancer Wednesday, September 29, 2010. She was born on July 18, 1951 in Havana, Cuba to Guillermina DeSoto Fornasier and Manuel Fornasier. The family, including sister Elly and brothers, Manuel and Antonio, moved to Key Biscayne, Florida in 1960 and eventually to Winston-Salem. Maria Graduated from WFU in 1974. On August 11, 1974, Maria and Darian L. Smith were married at St. Leo's Catholic Church by a Baptist minister and a Catholic priest. While studying at Wake Forest Maria and Darian became members of the Baha'i Faith. Maria took on several careers during her life; she worked as an ultra sound technician, stay at home mother, Spanish teacher, and chiropractic office manager. Her spirit lives on in her daughter, son, two brothers, sister, both of her parents, and her beloved husband. Maria Smith was a true citizen of the world and had love for people of every nation, race, and religion. She was a fan of gardening, nature, health and wellness, decorating, and having deep and meaningful conversations with anyone that took the time to get to know her. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory followed by a memorial celebration at the Senior Enrichment Center (Kernersville Library)at 2:00 pm. A repeat memorial celebration will be held at the Baha'i Faith Center in Greensboro (3905 Lawndale drive) at 1:00 on Sunday, Oct. 03, 2010.
