Kernersville - Marguerite Porter McDaniel Dodson, 94, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 21st at home with her family by her side. She was born August 23, 1916 in Winston Salem, the daughter of Charles Henry and Martha (Mattie) Sarah Knox McDaniel. She attended Reynolds High School and on June 27, 1933 in Martinsville, VA married Howard Anderson Dodson. She worked at Salem Steel Stamping Co. assembling bazooka shells during the war, Hanes Hosiery and then took time out to raise the three children they had over the next years. When the children were older, she worked for Hunter Publishing Co. until Howard opened Dodson Electric Company, where she worked as the secretary and office manager until they retired. After retirement, they enjoyed working on their farm ""The North Forty"". They raised a few Black Angus cattle and had a large garden. Marguerite canned hundreds of jars of the bounty from their garden and cooked wonderful meals for the family on the many weekends they all spent together. She always had her fresh and moist coconut cake. Marguerite was very talented. She wrote poetry, played the piano, did oil and acrylic painting, enjoyed her woodworking shop and made many items to give to friends and family as well as making many crafts that she took to residents of the nursing home in King. She created beautiful needlework and made beautiful quilts giving most of them away to friends and family or anyone who needed one. She also donated some as fund raisers for the Senior Citizens Club. She and Howard enjoyed playing cards with family and friends over the years. Howard and Marguerite were members of the Mineral Springs Baptist Church until moving to Quaker Gap Church after retirement and attended Quaker Gap Church. After Howard's death, Marguerite moved to Kernersville and she was re-baptized at the Kernersville Seventh Day Adventist Church and attended there as long as her health allowed. During their marriage Marguerite and Howard gave of their time in the early years to the Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, They enjoyed being members of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge for most of their life and enjoyed participating in the many activities there. During their senior years, they were active members of Quaker Gap Friendly Club, Marguerite holding the office of Secretary and Historian and Howard as the Treasurer. They enjoyed the many activities and trips with this club and were voted the Friendly Club King and Queen. After Howard's death Marguerite gave many hours assisting and visiting the residents at Scenic View Nursing Center. They always tried to be a good neighbor and were very giving people who tried to contribute to their community. They were loving parents and we could always depend on them. They were loving grandparents who loved to spend many hours with their grandchildren and will be forever missed by their family but will remain in their memory and hearts always. Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mattie McDaniel; her grandson, Mark Douglas Dodson; her sisters, Ossie Smith (Chauncey), Ruth Pfaff (Fuller), Audrey Jacobs (Jake), Bernice Dixon (Frier). She is survived by two sons, Jerry Lehman Dodson (Shirley), David Wayne Dodson (Pat); one daughter, Patricia Ann Dodson Woosley Woodring (Larry); one grandson, Brien Shea Woosley; four granddaughters, Kim Lynn, Lou Ann Jarrett (Kenny), Laurie Martin, Lana Street (David); 10 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; two nieces, Sylvia Gritton (Harold), Ima Jean Clifton (Grady) and one nephew, Bill McDaniel (Katie). The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel, 141 Smith Edward Rd in Kernersville from 6 to 8 PM Monday Dec. 27th and services will be held Tuesday Dec 28th at 2PM at the Kernersville Seventh Day Adventist Church on the corner of Old Winston and Hopkins Rd, Kernersville followed by burial at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to express their appreciation to Kevin, David, Debbie, Tonya, Nikia, Tashina and all the other caring staff of Britthaven Nursing Center with special thanks to Peggy Caudill and Heather Davis for their care above and beyond and to the staff of Hospice after her move from Britthaven to Home.
