Margaret Gaines Piatt passed away June 21, 2013 at Salemtowne Retirement Community. She was the daughter of Walter E. and Nanny H. Gaines. She was born in Lexington, KY and moved to Winston-Salem when she was 6 years old. Mrs. Piatt graduated from Reynolds High School at age 17 and went on to attend Hollins University and then graduated from UNC with a major in English. On June 23, 1943 she married her sweetheart, Perry E. Piatt from Winston-Salem and they made their home on a piece of land outside of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Piatt served for 37 years as a volunteer at Salemtowne. Her dream as an only child was to have a large family. Her legacy is not in any college degree or workplace but in the home where it mattered most to her and to the family. We will forever be grateful for her love and selfless example. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Piatt was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Eugene Piatt. She leaves behind her son, Will Piatt and wife, Ginger; daughter, Nanette and husband, Jeff Long; six grandchildren: Eva Piatt, Ammon Piatt (Jess), Joni Huff (Kevin), April Silva (Cory), Josh Long (Cortney) and Michelle L. Scott; and also, seventeen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23 at Smith Saal at Salemtowne Retirement Community. A private inurnment will be held for the family. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to donors choice.
