Margaret Kates Newman, 86, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Oaks at Forsyth. She was born December 19, 1922 in Forsyth County to the late William Harbor Kates, Sr. and Sallie Webster Kates. Mrs. Newman was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Ernest Haywood Newman; three sisters, Louise Ritchey, Edith West, and Dorothy Hardister; two brothers, William Kates, Jr. and Jack Kates; and a granddaughter, Sally Elizabeth Andreashman. Surviving is a daughter, Patricia N. Ayers (Bill) of Rural Hall; son, Scott Newman of Winston-Salem; grandson, Billy Ray Ayers (Kim) of Castle Hayne, NC; five great-grandchildren, Cierra, Sean, and Ashley Andreashman, Jazzmin Ames, and Coleman and Brandon Ayers; also surviving are three sisters, Betty Thornton of Winston-Salem, Sallie Phillips of Winston-Salem, and Emma Joy Burton of Houston, Texas. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green and Dr. David A. Marcus, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the church graveyard. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church 4440 Country Club Rd.
