MARCUS REICH SHELTON of Winston-Salem, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, after several months of declining health. He was born July 28, 1922 in Winston-Salem, N. C. Mr. Shelton was the son of Grover C. and Marietta Reich Shelton. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Spainhour Shelton, whom he married August, 1949; daughter Martha Smith (Clay), of Salisbury and son Stephen M. Shelton; grandchildren Shelley Smith, Allison Smith, Betsy Shelton and Robert Shelton; and brother John Shelton (Dickie); and brother-in-law Lenue James, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rebecca Smith, Lola James and Mary Byerly. Mr. Shelton grew up in Winston-Salem where he graduated from Griffith High School. He spent a period of time working for the Winston-Salem Journal & Sentinel as a news reporter and as a sports writer under Frank Spencer. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1942 where he served in the 9th Air Force - 442 Troop Carrier Group, serving in England, France and Germany. After returning home he attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, becoming the first sports information director under Clarence Stasavich . He graduated with a business degree in 1950. After college he worked for Merchants Distributors, Inc. in Hickory, NC. In 1955 he joined his brother, John, as partner at Fence Builders, Inc. He retired in 1997. Mr. Shelton was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and on various committees. He was a charter member of the Piedmont Civitan Club where he served as president. He was an avid fundraiser, especially for The Boys and Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw, NC. Marcus liked and collected antique automobiles and enjoyed time with his grandchildren and spending time at his farm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2011, at First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2011, at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Television Ministry, 501 W.
