Manly Winfrey, Jr.

Mr. Manly Winfrey, Jr., age 57, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010. He was born on December 1, 1952 in Forsyth County to ""Red"" and Emily Winfrey. Manly was a veteran of the US Army, received his Eagle Scout award in 1971, and graduated from High Point University in 1977. Whether it was being a Boy Scout leader (for over 20 years), or attending dance recitals, band competitions, or swim meets, Manly was always very active in his children's lives. He was a lifelong trout and fly fisherman, and loved hiking at Stone Mountain. He was president of United Methodist Men. Manly was an active member at Kingswood United Methodist Church (for 16 years), and performed a list of duties there, including a Sunday school teacher, usher, youth leader, bazaar, and attending bible studies. He was a dedicated volunteer with Crisis Control donations, Samaritan Inn, Giving Tree and many more. Manly was part of the Masonic Lodge # 751 for 29 years. He worked for Pepperidge Farm as a distributor for 33 years and was Distributor of the Year on both district and regional levels. The family remembers great trips they shared with Manly, from whitewater rafting in WV, to Atlanta Braves games, beach trips every year, and evenings spending time together over dinner. Manly had a great love and devotion to his wife LuAnn, and would often attend marriage enrichment trips with her, through the church. He is preceded in death by his father-in-law Luther Yates. Manly is survived by his loving wife LuAnn Yates Winfrey of 32 years; four children Lee Eric Winfrey and wife Katie Sands Winfrey, Brittany Ann Blake and husband Nathaniel Allen Blake, Matthew Ryan Winfrey, and Courtney Ann Winfrey; parents Clement ""Red"" Winfrey and Emily Rock Winfrey; brother Joe Winfrey and wife Patty; sister Jane Howard and husband Kim; a host of nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Barbara Clayton Yates; brother-in-law Kenny Yates and wife Tina; and three granddogs Kloey, Kali, and Jack. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday August 5, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Rev. Sidney Lanier and Rev. Glenn Griffiths officiating. Burial will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
