Retired Major Howard Foard Costner, age 81, died in Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC on October 1, 2009. Born in Catawba County, Major Costner was predeceased by wife Gaynell Costner on May 1, 1997 ; son, James Costner in December 2007; parents , Ernest and Bertha Craig Costner; sisters, Hazel and Gladys Costner and Betty Franklin and brothers, Paul, David and Glen Costner. Major Costner is survived by his wife, Doris W. Costner of the home; daughters, Janet Hicks of Fredericksburg, VA and Martha Costner of Jonesboro, GA and son, John Costner (Shelva) of Griffin, GA; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His service with the Salvation Army included 43 years, retiring in 1992 and was a member of the Peacemakers Sessions. He also served in Mens Social (ARC) in Birmingham, AL, Louisville, KY, Baltimore, MD, Dallas, TX and Miami and Tampa, FL. Major Costner was involved in Corps work in Suffolk, Harrisonburg, Hampton and Fredericksburg, VA, Alexandria, LA, Beckley, W. VA, Atlanta and Thomasville, GA, Winston-Salem, NC and Union and Orangeburg, SC. Howard always loved the young people and the many children he came in contact with through the years. He always said that while he didn't hunt, fish or play golf, he always had a great fondness of repairing old cars. Major Costner served in the U.S. Army toward the end of WWII. During his final week, Major Costner greatly endeared himself to the nursing staff of Golden Living Center in Asheville, NC. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Major Terry Israel officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
