Mrs. Mae Rene Hauser Heffner, 93, passed away Friday, January 01, 2016. She was born March 31, 1922 in Surry County to the late Oliver Franklin and Lucy Allen Hauser. She graduated from Western Carolina Teachers College in 1943 and taught school for many years. On March 14, 1946, she married the Reverend W. Frank Heffner, and together they served a number of Methodist churches in the Western North Carolina Conference while raising three children, Sylvia, Lucy, and Bill. When Frank's health failed, they returned to Pinnacle in 1976, when Mae Rene became a member of Pinnacle United Methodist Church. Here she sang in the choir, played the piano, and taught Sunday School classes. She was active in the community, serving as treasurer of the Pinnacle Garden Club and the Pinnacle Senior Citizens. She was also a leader in the United Methodist Women and a volunteer at Pinnacle Elementary School. In 2002 she moved to Winston-Salem to be near her daughter. While living at Independence Village in Winston-Salem, she attended New Hope United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesley Workers Sunday School Class and the New Hope UMW. In 2012 her health failed and she resided at Arbor Acres Healthcare until she passed. Mae Rene made many friends there and was cared for by very loving nurses and aides. Preceding her in death was her husband, Rev. W. Frank Heffner and her brothers, Tom Frank Hauser, Porter Hauser, Dallas Hauser, and Oliver Wilson Hauser. Mrs. Heffner is survived by her children Sylvia H. Earnhardt (Bob), Lucy H. Johnson (Darryl), and Bill Heffner (Judy); ten grandchildren: April Cox (Bobby), Jason Vaughn, Lisa Fuller (Nathanael), Shelley Gibson (Sean), Brandon Vaughn (Angelique), Ben Heffner, Joey Fleming, Bryan Earnhardt (Julia), Ashley Meadows (Jacob), and Steven Earnhardt (Megan); thirteen great-grandchildren: Calleigh and Ryleigh Vaughn, Robert, Grayson, and Sophie Cox, and Parker, Bella and Aiden Gibson, Caroline, Emily and Taylor Earnhardt, Connor Meadows, and S. J. Earnhardt; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 3 at Pinnacle United Methodist Church with Rev. Lori Anne Bowen and Rev. Dianne Marsden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, January 2 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
