Dr. Madho Singh, 90, peacefully made his transition into the arms of Waheguru, surrounded by his loving family at home on Wednesday, December 16, 2020.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mohinder Singh; his three daughters, Rajvinder (Raj) , Gurprit (Sweetie), Harbax (Tina) and spouse Lalit; his son, Avtar (Tara) and spouse Pawandip (Sony); his ten grandchildren, Navdeep and spouse Heeral, Simran and spouse Shahniwaz, Serena, Amrit, Jasmin, Anand, Ava, Amar, Kiran, and Ivana; and his great grandson, Nishaan.
Dr. Madho Singh was born on January 14, 1930 in a rural village in Punjab, India, to the late Lashman Singh Dhesi and Maya Kaur Hayer. Tragically, his four brothers passed in childhood and he lost his beloved mother to smallpox at the tender age of fourteen. In 1957, Dr. Madho Singh married his beloved wife, Mohinder Samra. Dr. Singh graduated from Punjab Agricultural University and later earned his Ph.D. in Biology in New Delhi, India. Furthering his studies, he completed his post-doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon completion of his work, Dr. Singh and his family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he accepted a position as a Professor at Winston-Salem State University. In 1968, Dr. Singh and his family moved to Sudan, Africa where he worked as a Professor for the United Nations Education Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Two years later, he continued his career as a Professor at Winston-Salem State University, where he taught biology, microbiology, plant pathology, human anatomy, and physiology. He also taught nursing students, worked in cellular research, and later delved into the business world of real estate. With limitless curiosity for problem solving and learning, he frequently assumed the unofficial role of handyman, gardener, carpenter, cook, car mechanic, and tailor. After retiring at age 62, he won several gold medals over the course of multiple years in the race-walking category of the Senior games.
In addition to Dr. Singh’s unparalleled professional and personal accomplishments, he was a man of transcendental faith and spirituality, kindness, selflessness, and compassion. His charitable giving and generosity knew no limits. He was the pillar of his family and always led by example. His unwavering love for his grandchildren and great grandson will forever be cherished. His vibrant personality and charming sense of humor illuminated any room he walked into. He was adored by many, as he had an effortless ability to inspire others and share his unbounded optimism. Dr. Singh’s beautiful spirit and light will continue to shine and bring peace, love, harmony, and joy. Dr. Singh truly left the world a more beautiful place, and his legacy will continue to live on in every soul that he touched.
