Ms. Madeline Lucille Smedley, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on December 24, 2014. Madeline was born in New York City on November 26, 1920 to Anna Debes and Albert Smedley. Madeline's family moved to Brooklyn, NY in the 1930's. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederick and a sister-in-law, Bettie of Saddle River, NJ. Madeline was employed by DuPont (in the Empire State Bldg). Being single, she was able to pursue her love of singing and music to the fullest. As a leading Gilbert and Sullivan artist, she performed the contralto leads in all thirteen Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Her most memorable summer was when, in 1958, she sang in the Billy Graham NYC Crusade Choir. Madeline is survived by her niece Ann Oates (Jim), grand nieces, Amanda Black (son Ryan) and Kelly Cozart (children Haley and Logan) who reside in the Winston-Salem area. Also surviving are a nephew, Thomas Smedley (Penny), grand nephews, Scott Smedley (Arthea) and Stephen Smedley (Jolanda) (children Kyle & Morgan). The Smedley families reside in upper NY State. In 1991 Madeline moved to Winston-Salem to be near Ann and her family. For the past six years, Madeline has resided at Heritage Woods Senior Living. She served as a Docent and Security at the Reynolda House from 1992 until 2008. Madeline volunteered in many capacities for the Presbyterian churches where she resided, currently a member of Highland Presbyterian. There will be a celebration of life service at Heritage Woods, 3812 Forrestgate Dr, Winston-Salem, NC on Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. She will be buried alongside her parents in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Highland Presbyterian Church, 2380 Cloverdale St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
