Madeleine Duffy McGillan died April 19, 2016, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Madeleine was born in Omaha, NE on March 26, 1929. She is preceded in death by her parents (Madeleine O'Connor and Thomas C. Duffy), her sisters Patricia Duffy Knapp and Mary Cerinda Duffy Hart and one brother, Rev. Robert Duffy. Madeleine was raised in a home committed to education, her faith and community service. She was married for 47 years to Francis Edward McGillan, Jr., who died in 2004. She is survived by all of her 7 children and their families - Patricia McGillan (Seamus) of Louisville, KY, Mary Ellen McGillan Overman (Tom) of Washington, D.C., Martin McGillan (Tee) of Fort Mill, SC, Fran McGillan (Lizette) of Lexington, SC, Marguerite Krause (Jeffrey) of Frederick, MD, Kathleen Trench (Sean) of Sterling, VA and Rosemary McGillan (Karen) of Alexandria, VA - and 9 grandchildren (Jeremiah and Benjamin Overman, Bradley and Brendan Krause, Riley and Tate McGillan, Devin and Ryan McGillan and AnneMarie Trench). She was blessed with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who remain to celebrate this incredible force of nature. Madeleine was a dedicated member and volunteer at St. Leo's Catholic Church and school. She continued contributing to many ministries that served the disadvantaged of our community. She volunteered at Crisis Control Ministry for more than 30 years, until her health prohibited her from working there any longer. Madeleine later returned to nursing at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for nearly 30 years, a community that became her second family and a place where she developed life-long friendships that she cherished until the day she died. In her ""free time,"" between raising her family, working full time and serving her faith community, Madeleine as an avid baker who always had a loaf of her wonderful Irish Soda Bread or famous chocolate chip cookies ready to share with friends and family. Later in life Madeleine mastered the art of quilting and yoga, two activities that brought her immense joy and many new friendships. The family would like to thank all of her friends for their tremendous support throughout Madeleine's illness, including the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center community, Rev. Brian Cook and St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem (shepherdscenter.org) and the St Johns Place community. A Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Monday, April 25 at 11 am. (an earlier announcement of a Friday service was in error). Friends may gather at the parish hall after the service. Hayworth-Miller is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Crisis Control Ministries (crisiscontrol.org), the Shepherd's Center, your local Catholic school or the charity of your choice.
