Mrs. Mabel Ferreira Smith, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on October 19, 1928, to the late Anthony and Constance Ferreira. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She graduated from Burdette College in Massachusetts before marrying Lester Smith. She created a loving home for her family in each of the many places the family was stationed during Lester's career in the Air Force. She was a gifted and detailed seamstress, sewing most of her girl's clothing, and was very involved in the girl's school activities as a teacher's aide and Catechism teacher. She was a scout leader, first Brownies and then Girl Scouts as the girls moved through scouting. All the scouts wanted her to be their scout leader as she had a reputation for the best camping trips, activities, and most of all ""haunted houses"" at Halloween. She will be remembered for her witty sense of humor, imagination, and creativity. She was a gifted visual artist and had an artistic sense of style and fashion. She loved babies and children, and two of her greatest joys in this world were her two grandchildren, Davee and Brianna. Mom specialized in making holidays magical and in tiny details that made each us of know that we were so very loved. Mom gave to each of us so much throughout our lives but we especially treasure our love of reading, travel, music, and the ability to appreciate many of the tiniest and most ordinary things that so many people pass by without noticing. Survivors include her loving and dedicated husband of 59 years and full-time caregiver during her illness, Lester E. Smith of the home; three beloved daughters Heidi Smith, Holly Simpson, and Cathy Swing; sons-in-law, David Swing and David Simpson; two grandchildren, David Swing Jr. and Brianna Swing; one brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Emily Ferreira; two nieces, Cynthia Gombos and Lori Ferreira; her favorite cousin Mary (Maizie) Wargat of Benicia, CA; and a very special friend of the family whom she loved like a daughter, Maria Iruela. A prayer service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Parklawn Cemetery in Winston Salem with Father Brian Cook officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the chapel at Parklawn Cemetery on Peters Creek Parkway. We love you, Mootie, and will love you and keep you in our hearts forever. xoxoxo
