Luther McDonald Ransome

Mr. Luther McDonald ""Cotton"" Ransome died on Friday, February 24, 2012, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Cotton was born on December 12, 1924 in Forsyth County to the late Charles Ernest and Flossie Petree Ransome. He grew up in the Mount Tabor area of Winston-Salem, and attended Old Town High School. Early in life and throughout school, Cotton was an athlete who loved sports, especially football, basketball, and softball. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps straight out of high school and proudly fought for our country in World War II. He then went on to work for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, from which he retired after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of First Alliance Church, where he attended for 65 years. Cotton was also a longstanding member of the West Salem Civic Club. He always looked forward to volunteering for Meals on Wheels with his special neighbor, Joanne Vernon. He loved visiting with his neighbors and was lovingly referred to as ""the Mayor of Hutton Street"". Cotton never met a stranger and, besides spending time at his mountain home in Laurel Springs, NC, one of his greatest joys was sitting on his front porch, waving at everyone as they drove by. He was preceded in death by four siblings, Charles M. Ransome, Mary Ann Ransome Creson, Margaret Ransome and Juanita Ransome Sapp. Cotton is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Clara Davis Ransome; son, Terry Ransome and wife Diane; daughter, Barbara ""Bobbie"" George; granddaughter, Amy Berry and husband Jason; and two beloved great-grandchildren, Jesse and Emma Berry. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 27, 2012 at First Alliance Church in Winston-Salem with Pastor Jeff Lonsinger officiating. Entombment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorial Contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 2895 Shorefair Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
