Lucy Greene Hubbard

Lucy Foard Greene Hubbard walked peacefully into God's arms on the morning of May 21st at Arbor Acres, surrounded by those who loved her.

Lucy was the first of five children born to Dr. and Mrs. Garland V. Greene of Fork in Davie County, NC, on May 25th, 1923. Spending her childhood in that close knit community, Lucy later graduated from Mocksville High School. Then, four years later, she graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University), where she was active in several education and teachers associations.

After college, Lucy taught school in Winston-Salem for 1 year. Then, she worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company, traveling around North Carolina. In 1954, Lucy and Warren Thomas Hubbard of Beckley, W.VA, an insurance executive, were married. Tom's company then transferred them from Charlotte to Winston-Salem, where their only child, Luellen, was born in 1956. Lucy was active in various activities and committees at their church, Reynolda Presbyterian.

After her marriage, Lucy renewed her teaching certificate and returned to teaching the fourth grade at Sherwood Forest Elementary School in Winston-Salem for the next 21 years. She shared her experiences from her travels around the US and Europe with her students, thus enriching their curriculum. In 1979, Lucy was elected as Teacher of the Year by the faculty of Sherwood Forest. Always loving math, she was active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for many years.

In retirement, Lucy continued her passion for teaching by tutoring students privately. She was also a docent at Reynolda House for several years. Having a love for knitting, Lucy spent many hours knitting beautiful baby blankets and dish cloths for gifts while watching either her Atlanta Braves play baseball or her Duke Blue Devils play basketball. Lucy maintained her original membership at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Fork and was also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Lucy was predeceased by her two brothers, Gene H. Greene and G.V. ""Bob"" Greene. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Luellen Hubbard Lockwood (Thomas E. deceased) of Seattle, her sisters Edrie Greene Brunt of Winston-Salem and Carmen Greene Price of Maitland, FL, and six nieces and nephews and their families. Lucy will also be so missed by all those whose lives she touched in so many ways.

A celebration of Lucy's life will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at 1:00 PM, at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 183 Fork-Bixby Road, Advance, NC 27006. In lieu of flowers, Lucy's family requests that donations be made to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
