Lucille Layman Smith

Lucille Layman Smith, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 9, at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Leitchfield, Ky., on March 9, 1919. She was the youngest child of Claude E. and Lula B. Layman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Justus W. Smith, and her brother, C. Edgar Layman. Mrs. Smith was a beloved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children: Wanda Fisher and her husband, Richard, of Pelham, Ala.; Norman Smith of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Neal Smith and his wife, Jan, of Winston-Salem, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Schleich and her husband, Andy, of Durham, N.C.; Caroline Bice and her husband, Bo, of Nashville; Peter Fisher and his wife, Kate, of Birmingham, Ala.; Suzanne Fisher of Pelham, Ala.; Gregg Fisher of Pelham, Ala.; and Rachel Palisin and her husband, Luke, of Arlington, Va. Mrs. Smith also had four great-grandchildren: Tim Schleich of Durham, N.C.; and Aidan, Caleb and Ean Bice of Nashville. She was a longtime Greensboro resident and faithful member of Rolling Roads Baptist Church in Greensboro, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed traveling the world as an Air Force wife. She was a member of the Guilford Battle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former Regent. In past years, she was an avid golfer and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 13, at Rolling Roads Baptist Church, 2800 Vanstory St., Greensboro 27407. Memorials may be made in her name to the church. Her final resting place will be in a family cemetery in Kentucky.
