Lisa Ann Gniewek

Lisa Ann Gniewek, 44, of Advance, NC and formerly Detroit, MI died peacefully on April 28, 2014 surrounded by her family following a courageous and inspiring 16-month battle with lung cancer. She was born January 20, 1970 in Detroit, Michigan to Richard and Maryann Lubic Kokoszki. Lisa moved to the Winston-Salem area in 2007 where she continued her career as a Registered Nurse within the Wake Forest Baptist Health Medical system. Lisa continued in various rolls until the time of her cancer diagnosis in January, 2013. When Lisa was not caring for others at the hospital, you could find her enjoying her family while spending time with them in the outdoors on camping or beach retreats, at the soccer fields, in her gardens, on the golf course or simply relaxing in the sun! Lisa was also an active member of the Food Ministry team at her church. Lisa utilized her gifts of nurturing and caring for others to assist in many fund raiser benefits as well as deliver bags of food and cups of soup to those in-need. Even with the above activities and through the discomfort of the cancer treatments, Lisa made time to deepen her faith by participating in numerous bible study courses. Because of her deeper understanding, Lisa was able to fully lean on her faith during the toughest hours of her battle. In addition to all of the above, Lisa began to improve herself by working out regularly. Her workout regimen progressed to the point where she became a member of a powerlifting team, competed in events and won in her age and weight category. She is survived immediately by her husband of more than 20 years, Matthew and two intelligent and beautiful daughters, Nicole and Erin. She is also survived by her parents, Richard and Maryann Kokoszki; a sister, Diana DeSnyder and husband Jim; a brother-in-law Paul Gniewek and wife Linda; two sisters-in-law, Judee Gniewek and husband Robert Remenapp and Teresa Chludzinski and husband Larry. Additionally, many nieces, nephews and cousins will also miss Lisa's amazing personality. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Monday May 5, 2014 at Hillsdale United Methodist Church - 5018 U.S. 158, Advance, NC 27006 - with Rev. Jerry Webb officiating. The family will also receive friends for a celebration of Lisa's life from 6:00 - 8:00pm on Sunday May 4, 2014 at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family and friends request monetary donations be made. These funds will be used in the creation of a non-profit organization to create increased awareness for the signs of early lung cancer detection through the annual ""Lift for Lisa"" benefit. (The family is in the process of setting up an account.) Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
