Mrs. Lillie Brown Sutton, 97, a resident of Winston-Salem died Wednesday evening, October 20, 2010 at Salemtowne Retirement Community. Mrs. Sutton was an active member, of the New Hope Christian Church, in Winston-Salem, during her earlier years. After 30 years of loyal employment, she retired from R.J. Reynolds in 1978. She then volunteered in the flower room at Forsyth Medical Center where she often expressed her simple philosophy for a happy life: ""Keep looking up!"" Her warmth, love of people, contagious laughter, sense of humor and resilience will be long remembered. The following analogy exemplifies the way she lived her life: ""She bloomed where she was planted."" She was born February 19, 1913 in Winston-Salem to Elizabeth Ellen Kiser Thacker and Floyd A. Thacker. Mrs. Sutton was preceded in death by her husbands, Anthony Waters Brown and Henry Sutton; a son Anthony Floyd Brown; two sisters, Mattie T. Bennett and Opal Watkins; and three brothers, M. Lindberg Thacker, Floyd A. Thacker, Jr., and Grady Thacker. She is survived by two sisters, Hazel T. Brothers of Cary, NC and Faye Lucas of Jacksonville, FL; a son, J. Thomas Brown and his wife, Carolyn C. Brown of Clemmons; two daughters, Corinne Ona Johnson and Rebecca-Joy Gabriel both of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Carol Brown of Pfafftown; eight grandchildren, Susan Myers, Sharon Culler, Gina Riggins, Mark Brown, Diana Johnson, Shawn Johnson, Karen Cearbaugh and David Brown; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will celebrate her life in a private gathering and graveside ceremony 2:00 pm Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Forsyth Memorial Park.
