Mrs. Lillian Norman Matthews, 81, formerly of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. She was born October 29, 1927 in Yadkin County to James H. and Beulah Spainhour Norman. Lillian married her sweetheart, Nelson E. (N.E.) Matthews on May 6, 1945. They were a perfect couple until his death in August, 2001. Mrs. Matthews was a faithful member of Ardmore Baptist Church and was retired from AT&T after 33 years of service. Surviving are her daughter, Julie Lawson and husband, Randy of Pilot Mtn.; three grandchildren, Christopher Lawson and wife, Cassie, Jeremy Lawson and fiancé©, Nicole Kauffman, Maggie Lawson and fiancé©, Blake Bohannon; three sisters, Virginia Woodruff (Sam) of Elkin, Betty Kennedy of Boonville, Bertha Rothrock of Wallburg; and a brother, Gus Norman of Dobson. ""Icky"" was a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother. On Sunday evening, she met N.E. at ""The Little Brown Church,"" and they went for a stroll on Heaven's Beach. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Ardmore Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Ireland officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
