Leontine "Leely" Lowe

Mrs. Leontine ""Leely"" Lowe, 93, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017 in Richmond, VA. She was born November 11, 1923 in Mecklenberg County. Mrs. Lowe worked as an Administrative Assistant for Forsyth County Health Department, Beltone Hearing Aid Center, and retired from Salem Academy. After retirement, she volunteered at the Academy library and later at several elementary school libraries in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. She was an avid reader and loved to learn. She also loved to sing. Mrs. Lowe was a longtime member of the Singer's Guild, later the Winston-Salem Chorale and at various times sang with the choirs of Home Moravian Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She continued singing with the First Baptist Church choir into her 80's and served as the Music Librarian for many years. Mrs. Lowe was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Boyd E. Lowe; a son, B. Alan Lowe; her parents, Annie and Homer Gardner; two sisters, Norma Jeanne Flowe and Nancy G. Lloyd and a brother, Donald A. Gardner. Surviving are a daughter, Anne Lowe Murphy and husband, Jim of Glen Allen, VA; two grandchildren, Kathryn M. Tayman and husband Gene of Mechanicsville VA and Charles E. Murphy and wife Kris of Champaign, IL and one great granddaughter, Emily M. Tayman. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, Reich Chapel with Rev. Christa Warise officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
