Mr. Leonard Elton Vannoy, 94, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Leonard was born in Fleetwood, NC, on February 9, 1928, to the late Elton Lee Vannoy and Vera Moretz Vannoy. Leonard was an intelligent man who could read the Bible and newspaper before he started school. He skipped a grade, and then completed two years of college before being drafted into the Army. He then married Nellie Bly Dillard on January 21, 1950.
Mr. Vannoy was preceded in death by his three sisters, Violet Vannoy, Iris Watson (Gene), and Christine Leonard (Vern); one brother, Winfred Vannoy (Lorraine); and granddaughter, Kalen Noelle Vannoy.
His wife Nellie survives him, as do their two children, Jeanette Weyandt (Ken) and Barry Vannoy (Kelly); and one grandson, Kaleb Vannoy.
Leonard is also survived by his brother, Jay Vannoy (Jane) of Winston-Salem, NC; sister, Dawn Hauck (Tony) of Fleetwood, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews who consider him to be their favorite uncle. He actually became a favorite of almost anyone who met him throughout his life.
His Godly demeanor and lifestyle were authentic, and his loving nature drew people to him. More importantly, his witness drew people to God. He loved the Lord and served Him as a deacon and 5th grade boys Sunday School class teacher for decades at Gospel Light Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held for Leonard on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 12:00 PM at Gospel Light Baptist Church. The service will be livestreamed on the church website for those unable to attend. Please go to www.glbcs.org and click the "livestream" link on the homepage. Interment will follow the service at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gospel Light Baptist Church, 890 Walkertown Guthrie Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or to Trellis Supportive Care, 100 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
