Leon Ryan Kendrick, Jr.

Leon Ryan Kendrick Jr., 86, passed away Tuesday October 13, 2015 at Forest Heights Senior Living Community. He was born March 1, 1929 in Charlotte to the late Leon Ryan and Jean Hill Kendrick. Kendrick graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a sociology major and served in the Marine Corps, achieving the rank of captain. He retired from employment with the City of Winston-Salem as superintendent of maintenance where he managed fleet services. Kendrick went on to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County and initiated the opening of Winston-Salem's first ReStore. He also gave volunteer service to Forsyth County's Meals-on-Wheels program. He was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church where he served as a Junior Warden. Kendrick was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Gail. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Brown Kendrick. Surviving also are his son Matt (Karen) Kendrick and their children Liza, Madeline, Sarah, and David; son Rick (Sharron) Kendrick; and daughter Katherine (Matthew) Ziff and their son Benjamin. Leon was devoted to envisioning and carrying out projects at home with his wife Barbara, building their homes and improving them. A gifted gardener, he was rarely without a vegetable garden to tend. He loved the North Carolina coast and mountains and traveled there often with Barbara after he retired. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, with a reception to follow at the church.
