Lemona Benton Mahaffey, 86, left her daughter's home, after five years of illness, moving into her heavenly home on March 19, 2015, running into the arms of her precious Savior, whom she loved with her life. Lemona Mahaffey was a quiet, unselfish lady, who was known by many as the Childrens Ministry Drector at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Mrs. Mahaffey delighted herself in teaching many generations of Jesus love. She loved the children and the families of Cornerstone Baptist Church, giving many of her years there, serving her Savior.
To her family she was known as mama and mamaw. Her family was blessed to have the example of someone who not only talked the talk, but walked the walk of her relationship with Jesus. Many times when she could have walked in unforgiveness and self pity, she instead forgave and held no grudges, never speaking an unkindness about anyone, even when some would say it could be justified. A wonderful example to all who knew her.
Left behind to treasure her memories are daughters and son in laws, Phyllis and Mike Doss of Douglas, Alaska, Bonnie and Ron Hilton of Winston-Salem and grandchildren, Brianna Doss, Aaron and Addy Hilton A special sister in law, Flora Nichols, whom also helped to take care of Mrs. Mahaffey, as long as her health allowed and brother in law, Garner Mahaffey, who faithfully checked on Mrs. Mahaffey and brought her ham biscuits, along with other family and friends. Mrs. Mahaffey was proceeded in death by her husband, C.P. Mahaffey. Her mother and father, Harvey & Virginia Benton and sister, Mary Fleming, along wth a host of friends and family, among which is Nellie Hilton, who loved and cared for Mrs. Mahaffey, before leaving this earth much too soon, all were waiting to welcome her home. Mrs. Mahaffey had several caregivers helping the family to take of her, without them it would not have been possible. We say a sincere thank you to Jennifer Failing, Kimberly Brandon, Amber Zimmerman, Andrea Ortiz, Danielle Ledford, Jennifer Ignaziak amd Joy Thompson, who lovingly cared for Mrs. Mahaffey, bringing her much joy. The family would also like to thank Mrs. Hilton's employer, WBFJ, who patiently let her take care of her mama, with encouragement and love. The family would also like to thank Community Hospice for their excellent care and support in the last months of Mrs. Mahaffey's life, Last but certainly not least, the family would like to thank God for the strength and provision for everything they needed to walk out this journey. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am on Monday, March 23, 2015 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 4507 Thomasville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
