Lee Monroe Safrit, 85, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008. A lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, he was born on March 26, 1923, the son of the late Lollie Emiline Powell and Henderson Monroe Safrit. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. Mr. Safrit served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Mississippi. After a lifelong career in cost accounting, he retired from Western Electric where he worked at Lexington Road and the Guilford Center. He was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church where he was bass soloist in the Sanctuary Choir as well as a member of the Christian Fellowship Class. He also spent many years as a member of the United Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Julia Ross Brower. Mr. Safrit is survived by a son, Charles Safrit and his wife Bonnie of Siler City; two daughters, Julie Gadd and her husband David of Raleigh, and Dr. Janice Safrit and her husband Mark Chambers of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Chuck, Amanda, Megan, Adam and Brittany; and two great granddaughters, Caitlyn and Neveah. The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Ardmore United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Funderburk and the Rev. Kari Howard officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Family will receive friends in the reception room of the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 for the benefit of the Sanctuary Choir.
