Leanore Lucas Burgess

Mrs. Leanore Lucas Burgess, 95, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born April 24, 1915 to Raymond Jacob and Catherine Sherry Lucas. She grew up in Niagara Falls, New York where she graduated from Niagara Falls High School. She then studied at University of Pennsylvania for the English teaching profession. She met her future husband of 47 years, Norman William Burgess, at first Christian Church, where he was serving as interim youth pastor. They married in 1937. During WWII, while Norm was serving in the European Theatre of Operations, she was a Red Cross volunteer as well as a wartime telephone operator. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and was a longtime member of the choir, which her husband directed for 30 years. She served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce Hospitality Committee and was actively involved in politics; enthusiastically campaigning for her favorite candidate. She devoted her life to her husband and children. She enjoyed world traveling, music and theatre and was an avid reader of classic poetry and history. In 1975 she and her husband retired to Winston-Salem to enjoy their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Burgess established many wonderful friendships in Winston-Salem and was a member and past president of the Agenda Club. Mrs. Burgess was predeceased by her devoted husband, who died in 1984. Surviving are her daughters, Lynda Jenkins and her husband Gaither, Jr., Marylee Basore and her husband John; her son, Norman Burgess and his wife Susan; her four grandchildren, Gaither Jenkins, III and his wife Sarah, Burgess Jenkins and his wife Ashlee, John Basore, II, and Lynlee Burgess Basore; two great-granddaughters, Harper Jenkins and McKinley Jenkins all of Winston-Salem. A private memorial service was held for the family
