Lawrence Wayne McKnight, Sr.

- Mr. Lawrence Wayne ""Birdman"" McKnight, Sr. 68, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born June 8, 1941 in Forsyth County to James Madison and Vernell Masencup McKnight. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 30 plus years of service where he was affectionately known as ""Birdman"". Mr. McKnight loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Clark McKnight and a sister, Virginia Brown. Surviving is a son, Lawrence Wayne McKnight, Jr. and wife Sonia Priddy; three granddaughters, Taylor Cheyenne McKnight, Brett McKnight, and Brie McKnight; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, James V. McKnight and David McKnight and wife Linda; sister, Carolyn M. Hutchins; half-sister, Freda Blankenship; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 21, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Gary Snow officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, Elkin Division 688 North Bridge St. Elkin, NC 28621.
