BERMUDA RUN - Mr. Lawrence Caleb Harrington, 82, of Bermuda Run, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1926 in Old Salem, son of James Oliver and Sue Livengood Harrington. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James Oliver, Jr., and Robert L., and a grandchild. Larry, ""Booster,"" grew up a member of Home Moravian Church, played in the church band throughout his youth, and was a Boy Scout. He was a graduate of John W. Hanes High School, where he was active in student government and sports. He also played the trumpet in The Shirley Smith Orchestra and was a member of the Ushers Group at The Carolina Theater. Larry served as a flight engineer in the 516th Troop Carrier Group of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from North Carolina State University, where he was Commander of the Arnold Society of Air Cadets, a member of the Honor Society, and participated in sports and band. Larry was also a graduate of the Executive School of Management at Pennsylvania State College. Mr. Harrington worked for Owens-Corning for 37 years; he began as a trainee in the Newark, Ohio plant before becoming a plant engineer at their facility in Anderson, South Carolina. Mr. Harrington was then made the Plant Manager of Owens-Corning's Huntingdon, PA plant. He subsequently was Plant Manager for the company's plant in Barrington, New Jersey and then returned to Newark, Ohio as Plant Manager. Throughout his life, Larry was actively committed to the communities in which he lived and worked. He was on the Board of Directors (Campaign Chair) for the United Way of Camden County, NJ. Mr. Harrington was on the Board of Trustees of the Central Ohio Technical College and of the Licking Memorial Hospital. He served on the Board of Directors of The First Federal Savings and Loan; the Newark Area Chamber of Commerce; and the United Way of Licking County, as Campaign Chair. He was a member of the Wilby-Kincey Theatre Association of Winston-Salem. He was an avid supporter of the fine and performing arts, and was active in many and various church activities and committees. Upon retiring, Larry moved to Savannah, Georgia where he enjoyed playing tennis and golf. He continued his involvement in community service, working on the board of Union Mission, an agency dedicated to helping the homeless. He also was an active member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, and served on the Building Committee, the Trustee Committee (Chair), and as a Lay Leader. Larry returned to the Winston-Salem area as a resident of Bermuda Village in 2004. Mr. Harrington is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Wooten Harrington; two sons, Steven Mark and Philip Leigh, both of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Elliotte Sue and her husband, Ronald Ian Lopez, of Glen Rock, New Jersey; one granddaughter, Marina Rose Lopez; by nephews James O. Harrington, III and Richard C. Harrington and wife Fran, of Winston-Salem; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will be remembered fondly as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The family would like to thank all of Larry's dedicated caregivers, including: Mr. Lawrence Long; the nursing staff and administration of Brookstone Terrace; The Health Center at Bermuda Village; and the Palliative Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30pm on Sunday, January 4, at Bermuda Village with Pastor Wayne Marshall officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Palliative Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center, 3333 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or the charity of your choice.
