LaVon Clements Thomas

LaVon Thomas passed away May 13, 2014, at Hilton Head Hospital, Hilton Head, SC. She was born to Josephine Qurin Clements and Jesse Dean Clements on December 12, 1918, in St. Louis, MO. She was preceded in death by both parents and her husband, Homer Thomas. Also, preceding her in death were her brother Clayton Clements and half-brothers, Carl Clements, Edward Clements, and Roland Clements.
She is survived by her son, Earl Thomas (Pat) of Waleska, GA, and daughter, JoAnn Mount (David) of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by granddaughter Tracy Prescher (Mike) of Mesa, AZ; grandson, Cliff Thomas (Melissa) of Jacksonville, FL; step-grandson, David Mount (Barbara) of Greensboro; step-grandson, Ryan Mount (Laura) of Greensboro; step-granddaughter, Autumn Fender (Jason) of Roanoke, VA; numerous grandchildren who knew her as Memaw or Great Nana; her sister, Mina Jo Scott of Camano Island, WA; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends who were blessed by her friendship and love.
LaVon lived in Columbus, GA, from 1953 until 1986. Quitting school in eighth grade in order to work to help support the family during the depression, she later completed her GED with flying colors. She retired from Ft. Benning, GA, after 20 years in the finance office of Civil Service. In Columbus, she was an active member of Benning Hills Baptist Church and a member of the Chattahoochee Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and Woman of the Year 1978- 1979. When she moved to Winston-Salem she joined Ardmore Baptist Church and was active in many service activities there.
LaVon was an inspiration to others as she lived her religion, accepting others without judgment and with only love. She was always appreciative of those friends and special family members who were so attentive and loving to her this past year. Her life will be celebrated on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 11:00 am at Ardmore Baptist Church.
In keeping with her life of service, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the Salvation Army (Attn. Stella), 1255 N.
