Winston-Salem-Mr. Larry Odell McAlpine, 74, passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born August 5, 1943 in Forsyth County, the son of Rev. Ransom and Lema Arleva Yokeley McAlpine. He was a member of Christ Wesleyan Church, where he taught Sunday School and was on the local board of administration for many years. He was a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University and NC A&T University, where he received his Master's Degree. He taught history and was the Assistant Principal at Ledford Senior High School for 29 years. In 2002, Larry founded The Hoover Walk, which was named after Hoover Smith, Missions Director of the West District of the Wesleyan church. This walk has funded many Christian projects around the world. Over the last 5 years his focus has been building wells in Africa. Through donations and matching funds, he has raised over one million dollars for these projects. He had a love for antiques and was an avid walker. He walked over 28,000 miles since 2002. He was a very disciplined and positive individual. Larry's motto was "Attitude determines Altitude". He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Pamela (Pam) Hall McAlpine; a sister, Janet Freeman of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Rob Hall (Maureen) of Pfafftown; a sister-in-law Lisa Hall Simpson (Mike) of Winston-Salem; three nephews, Jon Freeman (Amy) of Winston-Salem, Andrew Simpson (Whitney) of Thomasville, and Devin Hall of Pfafftown; two nieces, Alexis Reeves (Matt) of Thomasville and Michaela Hall of Asheville and great nieces and nephews, Courtney Freeman, Taylor Freeman, Camden Reeves, Lyla Reeves and Reid Simpson. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM Friday October 6, 2017 at Christ Wesleyan Church with Dr. Jo Anne Lyon and Rev. Mark Norris officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM Thursday October 5, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
