Lanny Ross Cook

Lanny Ross Cook, age 62, of King, NC, a beloved husband, son, father, father-in-law and ""Poppy"" went to be with the Lord, on Thursday, May 26, 2011. He was born October 31, 1948 in Forsyth County to the late Arville ""Hobb"" Franklin Cook and Annie Byrd Bradley. Lanny was a veteran of the National Guard and was a member of Beck's Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Lanny was a teacher and coach with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for 34 years having served at Jefferson Junior High, Mount Tabor High School and Hanes Middle School. He was a talented athlete and communicator, using his gifts to impact many young lives through his caring example of devotion, respect, hard work and dedication. One coaching accomplishment he was most proud of was achieving 100 basketball wins, although his humble nature kept it silent. Lanny's lifelong love for the Yankees and devotion to Wake Forest football brought him much joy and his grandchildren were the apples of his eye. Surviving is his wife of 42 years, Lucy Daniels Cook; two wonderful daughters, Amanda Cook Rhodes (Steven) and Ashley Cook Flanery (Derick); and three beautiful grandchildren, Brady Luke and Piper Kate Rhodes and Kaleb Gray Flanery; mother, Annie Byrd Cook; a beloved cousin, Patsy Johnson Gilliland; and many other special cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 3:00 pm at Beck's Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with Dr. Karl Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday at 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm.
