L. Robert ""Dirty Bird"" Kirk, age 57 of Winston-Salem, NC passed away August 15th, 2009 at 3:15pm the result of a motorcycle accident that occurred on July 2nd, 2009. Born at Norton Air Force Base, San Bernardino, CA on May 6, 1952, Robert was the son of L. Eugene Kirk and Faye Smith Johnston. Robert was a 1970 graduate of Harding High School in Charlotte, NC and upon graduation enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. A Vietnam combat veteran, he was proud to have served his country and fight beside his fellow Marines. Robert was awarded the following for his service: Meritorious Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Unit Cross of Gallantry, and Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged for his service to his country in December, 1976. Robert was preceded in death by his father and his loving wife of 19 years, Patricia Moore Kirk. Surviving to cherish his memory are his mother, Faye S. Johnston of Indian Trail, NC, his two sons, J. Scott Kirk of Pullman, WA, and Daniel J. Kirk of Winston-Salem, NC, a sister, Evelyn ""Lynn"" (Geoff) Tierney of Indian Trail, NC, a brother Jack C. Utley of Lincolnton, NC, his stepchildren, David, Dustin, and Denise Moore of Winston-Salem, NC, and numerous cousins that always looked up to their older cousin Robert, one aunt, Jean Dixon of Charlotte, NC and one uncle, Pete (Vivian) Smith of Charlotte, NC. Also left to cherish his memory is his loving friend, companion, and fiancé© Ms. Tammie Swain of Winston-Salem, NC, and two dear friends, Eric VanOrden and Don Hawkins. Robert had an amazing zest for life that was infectious, his booming personality and larger than life smile will be always remembered by all those who knew or met him. Our heartfelt thanks for all the staff and caring nurses at the Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, especially a very special nurse, Jennifer Humphreys in 5-B, ICU and the Hospice House in Monroe, NC. The support and caring you gave for Robert and his family and friends will always be remembered. A graveside services will be 1:00 PM Friday at Pfafftown Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Semper Fi Robert, when we look to the gates of Heaven we are proud to know they are guarded by a true Marine!
