Koyt Augustus Shields

Mr. Koyt Augustus Shields, 97, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at his home. He was born January 14, 1916 in Forsyth County to Burley Eugene Shields and Stella Alspaugh Shields. Mr. Shields retired in 1981 from ADT after over forty years of service. Mr. Shields enjoyed gardening and raising cattle on his farm. He was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite and was a Mason at Salem Lodge. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Sue Huffman Shields and his second wife of thirty years, Daphne Foster Shields. After retiring, he and Daphne enjoyed going to auctions and spending time together at Holden Beach. Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Robert Shields, Dallas Shields, Ray Shields, and Sylvester Shields and one sister, Carolyn Shields Evans. Mr. Shields left behind one son, Randall Keith Shields, and wife Debbie of Clemmons, NC; stepdaughters Pamela Stephens of Wilmington, NC and Mandy Todd and husband Patrick of Myrtle Beach, SC; a step-son Glenn Thrush and wife, Dottie of Greensboro, NC; a brother Carl Sheilds of Winston-Salem, NC, a sister Catherine Shields Soots of Wilkesboro, NC, grandchildren William Shields, Vince Stephens, Ashley Stephens Case and husband, Brandon, Cory Todd, Cody Todd and wife, Amanda, Ali Todd, Kenzie Todd, Tanya Thrush, Dawnyelle Thrush Leonard and husband, Keith, along with several great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 4:30 PM Friday, February 22, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek chapel with Rev. David Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 2390 Bethel Church Road, Winton-Salem, NC 27103 or The National Kidney Foundation.
