Mrs. Kathryn Walsh Ranlett Murphy, 106, died peacefully on October 6, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Although saddened by her passing, those who knew ""Katy"" will be consoled by memories of her personal warmth and her bright spirit. She was born on November 4, 1901 in Pittsburgh, PA, to Michael Joseph Walsh and Elizabeth Lynch Walsh. Her family moved to New York City when she was a young child. Attracted to the Broadway stage at an early age, she performed in juvenile roles in several musical productions, including ""The Rose Maid"" on Broadway and the road company of ""The Blue Bird"". She later had a prominent role in the road company of ""Jack O' Lantern"" with Fred Stone. After her marriage in 1922 to Albert Sidney Ranlett, now deceased, she no longer performed on the stage. However, she continued her connection with the theater by working as treasurer and assistant treasurer at Broadway Theaters operated by The Shubert Organization. In 1966 she retired to Southhampton, NY with her second husband, the late James Vincent Murphy. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1985. She is survived by a daughter, Helen E. Sutton of Biddeford, ME; a son, Jay D. Ranlett of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Susan Saunders of Durham, ME, Timothy Noyes of Los Angeles, CA, and David Sutton of Portland, ME; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Hartery of Manchester, NH, and Kathryn Saunders of Seattle, WA; and a niece, Dierdre Shaw of Bowral, NSW, Australia. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
