Kathryn Barrier Hayes

Kathryn Hayes passed into peaceful sleep on July 9, 2011. She enjoyed a long and lovely life as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and a loving friend to many. Kathryn was born on August 6, 1927 in Sheridan, WY to Henry Webster Barrier and Octa Vayne Earnhardt Barrier. She spent her early years living between Concord, NC and Black Mountain, NC. After graduating from Winecoff High School in Concord, she attended Queens College in Charlotte and then completed her medical technician degree at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. It was during this time she met the love of her life, Don. They married, had three sons, and settled in Winston-Salem for many years of love and laughter. After making sure her children were happily adjusted to school, Kat returned to work at the VA Laboratory in Winston-Salem, where she worked for more than 20 years providing caring service to veterans of several wars. Kathryn cherished her membership at Ardmore United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Her children were baptized there, grew up there, and thrived. Her friends there became her second family. After retirement, Kathryn lived for several years at Vienna Village in Pfafftown, where she received the finest care and the greatest love possible. Kathryn is survived by an adoring family that includes Michael and June Hayes of Pfafftown, and three grandchildren, Jackson, Emma, and Ava; cherished granddaughter, Jordan Hayes DeJong (Jared) of Woodland Park, CO; Kevin Hayes and Vickie Sigmon of Winston-Salem, and grandchildren Dylan Hayes, Christy Hayes and great-grandchildren, David and Haley; Mark and Robin Hayes of Lexington, MA; a devoted sister, Betty (Joe) Fries of Concord, and favorite nieces, Nancy Fries (Doug) Faggart and Jean Fries (Fuller) Beasley; and a special cousin Judy (Paul) Martin. Kathryn lived a good life, laughed much, loved openly, and will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends. May she rest in the warm loving arms of God. A memorial service will be held at Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Her ashes will be interred beside her parents in Concord, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
