Dr. Kathleen Arvella Gray Larson, 95, of Winston Salem was taken home to join her Lord on September 3rd. Born December 6, 1925, in Winston Salem on Chapel Street to her parents Blain and Mamie (Patrick) Gray. She was a retired teacher and school administrator. She became a Christian when she was very young and served the Lord for many years. She also was an ordained minister.
In 1944 she graduated from Griffith High School and did nursing duty at City Hospital. She attended the University of Cincinnati and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at God’s Bible School in Cincinnati. In 1950 with completion of her Bachelor of Arts degree Dr. Larson headed west by train and started her teaching career in Peerless, Montana where she met her future husband, Roy.
In 1955 she received her Master’s Degree from the University of Montana and in 1997 she received her PhD at the University of Santa Barbara. She was an accomplished author and in 1997 she wrote her first book Gray’s of the Outer Banks which was the lineage of her family. She leaves behind her three children Pam, Ben, and Sylvia (Bruce Campbell); three grandchildren, Mamie, Bruce Michael, and Katherine; two great grandchildren Esten and Evaly; three siblings Violet Kimel, Juanita Dull, and William Gray; and three sisters-in-law Helen Gray, Marie Chenoweth, and Aquina Larson. She was preceded in death by two brothers Roy and Troy and in 1975 by her husband Dr. Ben Roy Larson.
Dr. Larson was a resident of the state of Washington for many years. She enjoyed entertaining and enjoying her grandchildren at her home on Diamond Lake. As an educator, she traveled to Europe on numerous occasions taking groups of students with her, until a few years ago Dr. Larson called Pine Knoll Shores home. Always the athlete, she enjoyed long walks on the beach, checking out the piers and riding the ferries out to Cape Hatteras to visit relatives. She will be missed and loved with every passing day.
A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A reception will follow the service in the Robert F. Miller Center. Dr. Kathleen Larson will be laid to rest beside her husband at a later date in Scobey, Montana. Online condolences can be made at www.hayworth-miller.com .
