Kathleen Wheeling Hayes passed away August 13, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 11, 1927 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Thomas A. Wheeling and Addie Laxton Wheeling.
Kathleen was married for 65 years to Ernest D. Hayes, before his passing 2 years ago. They lived together in the British Woods neighborhood for 47 years, and she continued to live there until last Thanksgiving when she suffered a stroke. She loved her home and her wonderful and caring neighbors.
Kathleen worked for Bank of America for 29 years as a secretary, loan officer, branch manager and valued member of the bowling team. She continued to enjoy her fellow retired bankers at BofA Retirees breakfasts. Kathleen enjoyed working part-time with the Recreation and Parks Department's Mallwalk Program and the Cricket's Nest Craft Shop.
She was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church for over 60 years, and treasured her dear friends there. She was a great cook who enjoyed sharing her talents with others. Following her recent stroke, she lived at Brookdale on Reynolda Road, where she made many friends who loved and cared about her. Thank you Gwen, Joe, Bridget, Lib and many others.
Kathleen was loved and is survived by son Samuel W. Hayes and wife Jen of Charleston, SC, daughter Polly H. James and husband Billy of Charlotte, 6 grandchildren, Erin Marsala, Seth Hayes, Dillon Hayes, Lucas Hayes of Raleigh, David James of Los Angeles and Andy James of Charlotte. She was blessed with one great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Marsala. She is also survived by her best friend and twin sister Lorean W. Parham of Winston-Salem, her sister-n-law Erleen L. Wheeling of Newport News, VA, and many loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hayes was predeceased by her daughter, Laura L. Hayes and her sisters and brother, Elsie Reeves, Polly Norwood and James T. Wheeling.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 14 from 6:00- 8:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller on Silas Creek Parkway. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 15 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Waughtown Baptist Church with the Reverend Eddie Brackett officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
