Mrs. June Ardell Shamel, nee Zimmerman, entered the more immediate presence of our Lord on the morning of June 27, 2017. She was born in Reading, Pennsylvania to William and Ethel (Bear) Zimmerman on June 5, 1930. Mrs. Shamel graduated from Reading High School in 1948 and the Moravian Theological Seminary for Women in 1954 with the desire to enter their mission work. She married Reverend Richard I Shamel on August 13, 1955, and they began their ministerial work at Coopersburg Moravian Church in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania. After serving three churches in New York City they began their missionary work in St. John's Antigua, British West Indies in 1968 at Spring Gardens Moravian Church. Their work in Antigua was cut short by unfortunate circumstances after four years and came to North Carolina where June began her work at the Legal Aid Society offices in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Lexington. She retired in 1995. June has been a member of Macedonia Moravian Church for many years where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was predeceased by her parents and two siblings, brother Charles Zimmerman and sister Jane Zimmerman Bach. She is survived by her husband Reverend Richard I Shamel, three sons: Paul and Steven Shamel (Tammy) of Winston-Salem and Carl Shamel (Melanie) of Lewisville, and seven grandchildren: Benjamin, Samuel, Aubrey, Diane, Sara, Danielle, and Dylan. A special thanks is extended to the true Visiting Angels Susan and Amanda and to the staff of Hospice at Forsyth Medical Center and at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House. Also, a very special thank you to Dr. Copeland at Forsyth Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted at Macedonia Moravian Church, 10:00 AM Friday, June 30, 2017, officiated by Pastor Zachary Dease. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, June 29, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
