Mrs. Julia Fay Thaxton Cannon, 90, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016, at Heritage Woods Assisted Living. She was born February 12, 1926, in Warrenton, Georgia, to the late Edward Lee and Emmie McGaughey Thaxton. She graduated in 1942 from Warrenton High School as valedictorian and then relocated to Atlanta to attend Draughon School of Commerce. There she met Everette Howard Cannon, whom she married on June 6, 1945. They were married for 59 years until his death on June 6, 2004. In 1948, she moved with her husband to Winston-Salem where she worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration. Later she did secretarial work for her husband as he began and grew his accounting firm, E.H. Cannon & Company (now Cannon & Company, L.L.P.). Upon the birth of her children, she became a devoted homemaker for her family. Mrs. Cannon was a constant companion to her husband, traveling extensively with him both for pleasure and in carrying out his professional responsibilities. She enjoyed reading, playing golf, bowling, and socializing with her numerous friends. She was an active member of South Fork Church of Christ and taught children's Sunday school for many years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cannon was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Elizabeth T. Martin and Doris T. Athan. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Glen E. and Anne Cannon of Winston-Salem; her son and daughter-in-law, Trent E. and Nancy Cannon of Walterboro, SC; four grandchildren, Julia Cannon (husband Aaron Diaz), Amy Cannon, Taylor Cannon and Kate Cannon; and a brother, Douglas L. Thaxton of Downers Grove, Il. The family wishes to thank her devoted caregiver, Brenda Beck, and the staff at VerraSpring at Heritage Woods for the compassionate services given to Mrs. Cannon. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at South Fork Church of Christ, 205 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, with Mr. Claude Pharr officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harding University, designated to the Howard and Julia Cannon Endowed Scholarship Fund, 915 E. Market Ave., Searcy, AR 72149 or to South Fork Church of Christ, designated to the Benevolence Fund, 205 Keating Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mrs. Cannon.
