Mrs. Joyce Vaughn Battle, 44, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in Ft. Bragg, NC on September 14, 1963 to Johnny and Mary Biven Vaughn. Joyce was a graduate of Fayetteville State University where she earned ALL-CIAA honors as a junior. She was a member of the National Women's Basketball Association following graduation, before going to Delaware State as an assistant women's basketball coach as well as an assistant volleyball coach. After coming to Winston-Salem, she was a physical education teacher at the Downtown Middle School where she also coached basketball. She is survived by her husband Jeff Battle and a son, Jordan Battle; her parents of Fayetteville; her grandmother, Mable Biven of Bardstown, KY; 3 sisters, Marsitta Butler and her husband James of Fayetteville, Melissa Basnight and her husband Shelton of Atlanta, GA, Denise Rush of Chicago; 3 brothers, Johnny Vaughn, Jr. of Fayetteville, Ronald L. Vaughn of Fayetteville and Joseph E. Vaughn of Mesa, AZ. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Wait Chapel with Rev. Tony Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
