Josie Hicks Simmons

Mrs. Josie Lee Hicks Simmons, 63 of Lewisville, died Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, ending a courageous seven-year battle with brain cancer. Josie was born on April 3, 1950 in Forsyth County to Edna Conrad and Charlie Lee Hicks. A proud and lifelong resident of Lewisville, Josie was a 1968 Honor Graduate of West Forsyth High School. Following high school, she received training and certification as a Histotechnologist at Forsyth Memorial Hospital where she worked for several years before joining Lyndhurst Urological Associates. She retired from there as Manager after thirty years of service. In retirement, Josie loved traveling with her husband, John, to England and France; being a grandmother; volunteering in the community and serving as an Election Assistant at the polls on election day. She played organ and piano since childhood and played and sang in church throughout her life. She treasured her thirty years of membership at Lewisville United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, sang solos, taught Sunday School and was in the LUMC Circle before she became ill in 2006. Josie was cared for daily and is survived by her husband of forty-two years, John H. Simmons, of the home; her daughter, Cathy (Mark) Norman; and her two grandsons, Brett Terill Duffey, II, and John Lee Norman, all of Lewisville. Also surviving are two sisters, Patsy Taylor and, Martha (Greg) Shaw; one brother, Terry Hicks, all of Winston-Salem; a niece, Caroline (Brian) Harrell; a nephew, Jeff (Merrell) Shaw. The family also expresses deepest gratitude to Passion Williams for six years of gentle care and comfort given to Josie at home, and also to Terry Deakle, P.A. with Clemmons Family Practice for excellent medical care and compassion. A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Lewisville United Methodist Church, 6290 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC with Rev. Keith Bingham and Rev. Ellis Rouse officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 305, Lewisville, NC 27023 or Hospice of Winston-Salem, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
