Josiah “Joe” Owen Sugg, III, 82, of Winston-Salem, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 20, 2022, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Greene County, NC on October 5, 1939, the son of the late Josiah Owen Sugg Jr. and Beadie Mae Nethercutt Sugg. As a youth he was very active in Scouting, received the God & Country award and was the Scout Bugler. After graduation from Snow Hill High School, he graduated from Oak Ridge Military Institute Junior College and attended Wake Forest University until he joined the Army Reserves. Upon completion of active duty in the Army Reserves, he graduated from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, with a BS in Business Administration. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Revenue as a Director in the Raleigh office after 34 years of service. Joe was very active in the community, local schools, and Ardmore Baptist Church, where he served as Church Treasurer, Deacon, Deacon Chairperson, Choir Treasurer and as a member of many other committees. He was the official starter of the Sherwood Sharks Swim Team in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed planning annual trips to Myrtle Beach, SC for his golf friends. Music was a special part of his life and he enjoyed being a part of the music program at Ardmore Baptist Church. He never met a stranger and traveling the world with family and friends was his passion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Anne Hardy Sugg; his loving children, Elizabeth Hardy Sugg Whitt (Greg) and Josiah “Josh” Owen Sugg, IV (Julie); cherished grandchildren, Max and Jackson Whitt, Katie, Nancy and Salem Sugg, and Aidan and Savannah Dixon; his sister, Angela Sugg Creech (Ed); his aunt, Grace Burke; and several nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Ardmore Baptist Church with Rev. Tyler Tankersley and Rev. Christa Warise officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private inurnment service will be held in the church columbarium with Dr. Gina M. Brock officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mr. Sugg.
