Mr. Joseph William “Bill” Phipps, Sr., 92, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully into the hands of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 7, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.
Although his family resided in Mt. Ulla, NC, Bill was born in Tampa, FL, on April 8, 1932, to the late Reverend James Robert Phipps and Elizabeth Milliken Phipps. He attended Mt. Ulla High School and the University of North Carolina before proudly serving two years enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Korea.
Bill led a long and successful career with First Union Bank where he won many accolades and advancements in leadership before retiring in 1994. Bill was a man of God and remained a devoted servant to the church throughout his life. He served on multiple committees, most recently the Epiphany Builders where he volunteered his time and craftsmanship skills to those in need. Bill found joy in tending his garden, fishing, golfing, and cheering on his beloved UNC Tarheels basketball team. He held fond memories of his time spent with family on Lake Norman and at the beach.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Phipps Moffitt.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Nancy Wright Phipps of Landis, NC; and his children, Joseph William “Bill” Phipps, Jr. (Sherry), Robert Michael “Mike” Phipps (Pam), and Leigh Anne Phipps. Bill was a proud father, grandfather, “Pawpaw”, and great-grandfather to his nine grandchildren, Brandon, Brittany, Mariah, Lindsay, Janie, Morgan, Megan, Will and Erin; and his seven great-grandchildren, Nancy, Maggie, Aubree, Kaleb, James, Walter and Josie.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 11:00AM at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany with Pastor Russell Peek officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany, 5220 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
