Joseph Gutierrez

Mr. Joseph Andres Gutierrez, 91, passed away at Brookridge Retirement Community on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. He was born on August 12, 1926, to the late Margaret Nesbitt Gutierrez and Andres Gutierrez in Lafayette, IN. Joseph proudly served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He retired from Vulcan Materials following a distinguished career as Chief Geologist, and Manager of Drilling and Exploration Mid East Division. In addition to his duties with Vulcan, Joseph educated countless school children at The Joseph Andres Gutierrez Earth Science Museum and Education Center located at the Vulcan Materials Company North Quarry. While his health permitted, he enjoyed membership in the Gem and Mineral Club and Corsa Rosa Car Club. A true renaissance man, Joseph possessed extensive knowledge in a wide variety of subjects. He enjoyed helping others; and there was nothing he couldn't fix. Joseph's huge sense of humor made him a joy to be around. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father who took pride in providing for his family. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nan Gutierrez; daughter, Cynthia Bostic; and son, Joseph Andres Gutierrez, Jr. Surviving are his daughters, Linda Gutierrez and Maria Combs (Kenneth); grandchildren, Raven Kitley, James Combs, and Tim Shackelford (Kristi); great grandchildren, Emma and Lily Shackelford; sister, Laura Felton; and daughter-in-law, Braxton Gutierrez. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
