Winston Salem - Mr. Joseph Manuel Griffin, 89, passed away Friday, January 20, 2012, at NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury. Joseph was born on June 10, 1922 in Forsyth County to the late Ernest L. and Della Smith Griffin. He was a WWII Veteran, a member of Glenn View Baptist Church and retired from Burlington Mills in Kernersville. Joseph enjoyed farming and raising tobacco and briefly held the State High Jump Record at Sedge Garden High. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Marnette Smith Griffin; four brothers, Dallas, Clyde, Curt and Ernest Griffin; two sisters, Thelma Reed and Vada Livingston; and one grandson, Zach Griffin. Surviving are three sons, Joseph Michael Griffin (Judy), Brian Griffin (Annette) and Kevin Griffin (Gina); one brother, Johnny Ray Griffin (Della); 9 grandchildren, Josh, Jennifer, Garrett, David and Dwayne Griffin, Lynette Owenby, Faron, Daron and Brent Akins; 4 great grandchildren, Madison, Alex, Maggie and Abi; and nine step great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Glenn View Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Coleman officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Tuesday, at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. Memorials may be made to Friends of NC State Veterans Home, P.O.
