KERNERSVILLE - Joseph Judson (Jud) Ferguson, 73, died peacefully at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital Friday, November 23, 2012. He was born February 27, 1939 in Washington, DC to the late John Ross and Effie Lovell Ferguson. Jud retired as a Sergeant with the Winston Salem Police Department after 30 years of service in 1993. After moving to Oak Island he worked for the Southport/Fort Fisher Ferry as Operations Manager. As an active member of Oceanview United Methodist Church he served as an usher, lay speaker, liturgist, and Stephen Minister. He was also a member of the Coastal Carolina Emmaus Community. Jud was a man of great compassion, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jud and Barbara recently relocated back to Kernersville and were active members of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. He loved the Lord and enjoyed life to the fullest, often saying ""It's a great day to be alive to serve the Lord"" In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, John Ross Ferguson, Jr. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Barbara; their two daughters, Cheryl Anne Ferguson and fiancé, Lee Black of Southport, and Jodie Carol Covington and special friend, David Peoples of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Jennifer Alderman (Jeremy), Laura Allen (Wesley), Alex Covington; one great-grandson, Griffin James Alderman; two nieces, Danna Livingston (Jay) and Donna Spencer ( Scott); brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Jean Brendle of Brevard; sister-in-law, Pat Brendle and special friend, Gail Feddish. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rorie and Pastor Fred Roberts from Oceanview United Methodist Church, Oak Island officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday, November 26, 2012 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts may be made to Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, 1510 Bunker Hill-Sandy Ridge Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284 or Oceanview United Methodist Church 8400 East Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465.
