Mr. Joseph Wilkie Childress, 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 4, 1940 in Forsyth County to Francis and Fannie Merritt Childress. Mr. Childress was owner and operator of Childress Home Improvement. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Nancy Perdue and two brothers, David Childress and Elisha ""Frank"" Childress and his father-in-law, Ralph Livengood. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Vivian Livengood Childress; two daughters, Jennifer Nugent (Tim) of Lexington and Kathy Little and fiancée Carl Hawks of Ararat, VA; two grandchildren, Christopher Nugent (Mary) and Angela Crocker (Brandon); one great grandson, London Crocker; one brother, William Childress (Barbara); one sister, Mildred C. Cox; his mother-in-law, Annie Livengood; a brother-in-law, Ron Livengood; a sister-in-law, Gail Shore (Al) and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Rev. Greg Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
