Mr. Jonathan Leo West (""J.L.""), 87 of Winston-Salem died peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. He was born on September 10, 1926 in Yadkinville, NC to Sanford Leo and Gladys Finney West. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Owen Kiger West, his parents; a brother, Aubrey K. West; a grandson, Travis Michael Jones; and a great-grandson, Matthew Thomas Hunter. He is survived by his two sisters, Betty Jean Rhoades of Raleigh and Mary Ellen Livengood of Wendell, NC. Mr. West is survived by four daughters: Gaye Morgan of Lewisville, Patricia West of Winston-Salem, Sandra Roark (Darrell) of Clemmons and Susan Jones (Michael) of Strongsville, OH; eleven grandchildren Stephanie Sample Brasili (Sean), Katy Sample Channel, Brian Spaugh (Angela), Brent Hunter (Kristen), Melissa Jordan Stenson (David), Elizabeth Jordan Moroz (Mark), Jonathan Jordan, Abby, Emily and Chrissy Jones and Suzanne Roark Peaks (Donnie); fifteen great-grandchildren, Naomi and Savannah Channel, Benjamin and Max Brasili, Alexandra, Nick and Emma Spaugh, Zac and Gracelyn Hunter, Olivia, Madeline, Sophia and Isabel Stenson, Breanna Jordan and Trey Price.
Mr. West served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. West retired after over 35 years of service with Southern Bell Telephone. He was actively involved and served as president of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Toastmasters and Winston-Salem Jaycees and was a member of both The Elks and Moose Lodge for many years. He was very involved in his church where he served as a youth Sunday school teacher and a lay delegate representing Ogburn Memorial Church to the Methodist Conference at Lake Junaluska. After discharge from the Army, Mr. West became active in numerous veteran organizations and served as Post Commander of both American Legion Post 55 and the VFW Post 1134 as well as a member of the national organization of the 40 & 8.
Mr. and Mrs. West traveled extensively together and with friends enjoying cruises all over the Caribbean, Hawaii and frequent trips to New York City. After retirement, they enjoyed spending the winters with their many good friends at the Anchorage Resort in Key Largo, Florida. They cherished their annual beach trip to South Carolina with their four daughters and their extended families reuniting and celebrating our family tradition of more than 60 years.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel, the Reverend Ray Burke officiating with interment immediately following at Forsyth Memorial Park. Our family would like to acknowledge the Heritage Woods assisted living staff, Community Home Care and Hospice of Statesville as well as Hairston Home Care. We thank them for all the care, kindness and friendship shown to our loved one and to our family during this difficult time.
