John Richard Williams

The Lord chose January 5, 2016 as the day for Dr. John Richard Williams to be with him in heaven. John was 93 years old. He was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC to Martin Van Buren and Daisy Rominger Williams. John was a Christian and a lifetime member of First Baptist Church. He went to Moore Elementary School and graduated from Reynolds High School. He attended Mars Hill College and later transferred to Wake Forest University.
Dr. John Richard Williams practiced dentistry for 43 years from 1947 until 1989. Following graduation from Medical College of Virginia in 1943, he practiced briefly in Winston-Salem, NC before joining the Navy and serving as a dental officer. His foreign service included a tour of duty in Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1952. After his service in Korea, he was reassigned to the US Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida where he completed his service obligation. In 1954, he returned to his home in Winston-Salem, NC, to resume practicing dentistry until he retired in 1989. He was president of the Forsyth County Chapter of the NC Dental Society in 1955. His great uncle, C.A. Rominger, was president of the NC Dental Society in 1893-1894.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Maxine Vaughn Williams. Surviving family members include two daughters, Deborah Nan Williams Whittaker and husband Jerry of Knoxville, Tennessee and Emily Kay Williams of Winston-Salem, NC; two grandchildren, Matthew Stuart Whittaker of Lakewood, Colorado and Anna Kathryn Whittaker Oberg and husband Nolan of Estes Park, Colorado. John was ""Papaw the Great"" to three great grandsons, Gabriel, Harrison, and Boone Oberg.
The family wants to thank all of his wonderful caregivers over the past two years. He could not have managed without their help. We also thank our good friends who have gone through this journey with us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Carolina Baptist Children's Home, BCH P.O. BOX 338 Thomasville, NC, 27360. John had a special place in his heart for Orphaned children.
