John Francis Vance, Sr.

KERNERSVILLE-John Francis Vance, Sr., 90, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud WWII veteran passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born November 7, 1919 in Forsyth Co. to the late Homer Blaine and Myrtle Kerner Vance. John was a life long member of Kernersville Moravian Church; as long as his health permitted he was active in the choir, band and the Men's Bible Class. He was one of the first US Postal city carriers in Kernersville and then switched to a rural route to retire with 35 years of service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Jewel Meadows Vance; a brother, H.B. Vance, Jr.; and a sister, Doris Vance Robertson. Surviving are his five children, John Vance, Jr. (Kathy) of Waldo, FL, Don Vance (Carol), Janet Smith (Tom) all of Kernersville; Penny Cheney (Michael) of Oak Ridge, and Beth Frack (Kevin) of Winston Salem; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Kernersville Moravian Church with the Rev. Don Winters and the Rev. Kevin Frack officiating. Mr. Vance will lay in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends following the service in the activity building at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Kernersville Moravian Church Choir or Band Fund, 504 S. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284 or Kate B.
