John Hooker (Jack) Thomas, Sr., of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on October 9, 1929 to John Howard Thomas and Elsie Barton Thomas. He attended public schools in Lynchburg, VA and Raleigh, NC and graduated from Wake Forest University. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was awarded The Purple Heart for wounds received in combat in Korea. John is survived by his wife, Martha (Dixie) Lewis Thomas of the home; a daughter, Gail Hopewell and husband Guy of New Bern, NC; a son, John Hooker Thomas, Jr. and wife Susan of Wilson, NC; grandchildren, Joshua, Kelly, Meghan, Scott, Zachary, Chelsea, Sarah and Bently. He is also survived by his brother, David W. Thomas and wife Iris of Cary, NC; and his sister, June Thomas Johnson of Greenville, NC. A graveside service will be conducted at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem at 2 PM on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 with Dr. David Hughes officiating.
