John Thomas Stanfield, March 19, 1927 - February 8, 2012. John Thomas Stanfield, 84, died February 8, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Guilford County on March 19, 1927 to Walter R. and Annie Stanfield. He graduated from Hanes High School in 1945 and attended the University of North Carolina in 1949, where he received B.A. degrees in Journalism, Radio, and Communications. Originally working in marketing, he became a licensed real estate agent in 1963 and opened John Stanfield Real Estate Company in 1964. He received the Paul G. Minish Realtor of the Year award in 1967. He became a real estate appraiser in 1970 and performed in excess of 15,000 appraisals during his career which spanned over 30 years. Serving as MLS and Board of Realtors Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, he also served as the Parliamentarian during elections for the Board of Realtors for many years. He became a REALTOR Emeritus in 2005 for over 40 years of REALTOR service. A member of Centenary Methodist Church and President of the North Winston Men's Civic Club, he was also active in the Forsyth County Republican Party. Although athletic in his younger years, his forte' was swimming, where he taught hundreds of individuals to swim and was recognized by the American Red Cross for his efforts to promote water safety. This was replaced by roller skating followed by clogging, which became his favorite pastime to go to live music events and street festivals in downtown Winston-Salem and other towns. John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 56 years, Clara. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Marie (Rick) Holland of Advance, one brother, Bill Stanfield (Barbara) of Winston-Salem as well as nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30PM until 8:30PM Friday at the funeral home In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Palliative Care Gift Fund / Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, 3333 Silas Creek Pkwy., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 and the Alzheimer's Association-Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.
